Ato Yotzarto – Cantor Josef Farkas

At the prodigious age of six, Cantor Joseph Farkas began singing as alto soloist under many prominent cantors in New York- among them where such noted chazanim as Leibele Waldman, Mordechai Hershman, Pierre Pinchik, and Moshe Ganchoff.


After the interruption of world war II, when Cantor Farkas served as a member of the united states army, he returned to his cantorial studies under the famous cantor Elias Shnipelisky.

In 1948, Cantor Farkas assumed his first cantorial position with congregation B’nei Israel of Bay Ridge in Brooklyn. He was then summoned to Chicago in 1954 to serve as the chazan for the Logan Square Congregation.

Upon the completion of their new sanctuary in 1957, Cantor Farkas was engaged by Congregation Ezras Israel, of Chicago.
