Uknown Cantors: Hanns John Jacobsohn

Cantor Hans John Jacobsohn (1890-1942) was the High Cantor for the City of Berlin and the Progressive Synagogue from the late 1920s until his death in the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp in May of 1942.

He was unable to escape Nazi Germany, like his wife and daughter because he was born in Poland (when it was German Territory), denied German Citizenship and was unable to get the appropriate papers to escape. Though he did send numerous requests to Shanghi and England (where his Wife & Daughter escaped).

The 1929 recording below of Lecha Dodi was found by his great-granddaughter Sandi Fox, while touring the Berlin Jewish Museum.
